the work that we put in

[The original thread is here and includes some downtime (ice skating) for Heather, and an appearance by several Appalachian cryptids.]

Heather has been living in the Oak and Iron since she got here. Despite her plans to make and sell alcohol to the residents of the island, there is no way to rush the acquisition of her stock. Fermentation times are what they are, after all.

But the winter weather brings the possibility of jacking... putting the alcohol outside to freeze, and then removing the ice crystals that form. It reduces the water content and thus increases the percentage of alcohol by volume. She has applejack and perry to work on in this fashion.

[1] You may come across her hauling barrels around (easily, despite the fact that it's just her) between the outdoor places she's stashed them in, and the small wooden shack she raised to keep her scavenged supplies in.

[2] You may see her with opened barrels, fishing out ice with a set of long metal tongs.

[3] Or, you may be lucky enough to be approached by Heather holding a small bottle and offering a taste test.

true self

[[ OOC: I am extracting this passage from my comment on an event, because it's a handy description of what Heather looks like in the dreamscape. Easier to point people this way than anything else. ]]

Heather, in her merrow form, is rather hard to miss. She resembles the popular depiction of a mermaid in only slight ways -- humanoid body to the waist, fish-like tail beneath. Long ginger-red hair cascades around her, growing only from the scalp area of her head. Her eyes are as black as ever, including the sclera this time. Her mouth is wider in her face, and full of sharp, pointed teeth. Her skin is ghost-pale and lacking in scales until about her collarbones, and then little scaly patches in flame orange and iridescent white begin to show along her arms and torso, larger around the gills that start halfway down her ribs, merging together to complete coverage beneath her waist.

Oh, and her full length in this form -- from the crown of her head to the end of her tail-fin -- is twenty feet. That fish tail of hers, with its various fins, is about eight feet long on its own.

the songs we shouldn't sing

DISCOUNT DRINKS FOR OPEN MIC NIGHT: NOW WITH REAL MICS!
By Timothy Stoker

DOWNTOWN HOLLOW (Empty Pockets Music Lounge) - After a great deal of confusion between locals and newcomers about the use of the phrase “open mic” to describe their “volunteer performer nights” at the local music lounge, Empty Pockets is pleased to announce the addition of new equipment for their stage! Through a collaboration with offworlders to create drawings of what a “microphone” ought to look like and a commission project with local engineers, we have now officially reinvented the microphone for use in Pumpkin Hollow. The local music scene is a flurry of excitement about this development--- local luthier Juniper Sweetwater already has expressed an interest in electric guitars and amplifiers. Seems like music and electricity will be getting a big boom here in town!

In the meantime, owner Dottie Siward has announced that drinks will be 30% off during open mic nights in celebration for a limited time! Check out the Empty Pockets Music Lounge any Friday or Saturday evening during the fall to take advantage of a little liquid courage, and hey, maybe put yourself out there. Could you be Pumpkin Hollow’s next big thing? You never know!

Open Mic Night -- original thread here, on Pumpkin Hollow: Test Drive Meme #9
[Partial repost from TDM #8, with a new song!]

Heather has somehow acquired an acoustic guitar. (Probably borrowed from a local... she would have asked so nicely and promised to return it in perfect condition...)

She walks out onto the stage and takes a seat, strumming the opening chords to Wandering Child by Wild Rivers before starting to sing.

And as she does, all who can hear it begin to feel a little melancholy, thinking of past loves and lost chances...

"I wish I met you, further along
Gave you my older heart, still and strong
But I wouldn't have a fire like I do today
Oh it burns for you babe...
"

...to feel those feelings and let them go, as part of what made them who they are. Those who still feel pain linked to such things... it's lessened somewhat.

"Oh, you got nothing on my tendency to be led astray
Oh, it took a blindside hit to show me the right of way...
"

Not gone, but just... less pressing. Less sharp.

Such a strange thing, isn't it?

stats; Heather Ann Harne NAME 27 years AGE She/Her PRONOUNS Human with Finfolk ancestry | has a merrow form HERITAGE Original Character / No Fandom FANDOM trying to escape a demon who had possessed her friend CANON POINT
personality; Heather is an extroverted person, who often presents herself as high-spirited and friendly. However, when she is comfortable with a person, she often goes quiet. It's actually a good sign when she's willing to hang out with someone and do quiet things side by side without much conversation.

She hasn't had the easiest life, especially growing up in one of the poverty-stricken rural areas of Appalachia. She can get defensive if it seems like someone is judging her for things like her accent, her family history, or her appearance. People have done so in the past. She's trying to work on it. Still, Heather assumes that most people think she'll be a problem in some way, so she kind of leans into that impression -- if people seem to be judging her, she will call them out in some fashion (usually with humor).

She may be quick to judge, but she's usually willing to give people another chance if they made her upset. This is especially the case if said person is remorseful. She is also quick to anger at times, but the anger also passes quickly. However... should someone repeatedly upset or hurt Heather, they will eventually run out of chances, and then it's on sight.

"I don't usually start fights. But I will finish them."

Heather is an atavist -- someone with fae ancestry whose gifts are more powerful than they ought to be, a sort of genetic throwback. Below is a link to a quick write-up about merrows, the type of fae that Heather (and her mother, and maternal grandfather) descended from.

the things into which we weave our souls

Heather Harne can be found wandering in various places on the island, hands dancing through the air as if plucking something free, or twisting some unseen fibers into a yarn. And sometimes -- for those who follow her for a while, or for those who see the truth of things as a matter of course -- one might observe an oddity.

Morning mist spinning downward upon itself, as though winding on a drop spindle, ghost silver and pearl white -- and Heather folds it end over end before pinching it between her fingers and quickly winding it into a ball. Then she flicks her wrist, tossing the unearthly material upward to vanish in midair.

Water from the hot springs hanging in the air after Heather splashes it upward, revealing colors from dissolved minerals as she pulls the scattered water further apart, spiraling and filling with bubbles and somehow solidifying into threads as she twirls her fingers. She combs those threads and blends the colors, and then they vanish just the same -- with a little patter of water droplets back into the spring to mark the passing.

Heather braids autumn-colored leaves into her fire-bright hair, and later when she combs out the loose bits of hair they have taken on the colors of the leaves.

At other times, she can be seen swimming in the surf. Every so often Heather walks out of the surf and sits on a rock above the tide-line, sorting through a handful of tiny, blue-black mussel pearls. Or perhaps she has to clean a bite on her leg, and work loose a needle-sharp fish tooth or two.

If she notices someone collecting shells on the beach, she might call out to them and offer some of those pearls in trade. Sometimes she finds what she is looking for -- though she never tells what it is exactly -- and other times, she simply gifts the person with her own find of the day.

What in the world is she doing? Perhaps she will explain, if she thinks she can trust you, or if she thinks you might be able to help.

[about merrows]

There are very few full-blooded fae left, which includes merrows -- the Finfolk of Ireland. Merrows are able to perform several magical feats by singing -- they can summon sea creatures to aid them, plant suggestions in the minds of those who hear them, materialize water while on dry land either to help them move around or as an attack, and also heal people or animals by singing. (The healing can only be achieved on the living. If there is no life to sing to, there will be no effect, no matter how hard the merrow tries.) How well one can do these magical feats is based on practice and experience just as much as innate talent.

Luckily for the remaining merrows, they can cross-breed with humans. This is achieved by a merrow weaving a magical cap to allow for shape-shifting between their natural shape -- which is a very large, half-humanoid and half-fish body -- and a human appearance. The resulting children are human but sometimes have merrow characteristics like webbed digits or patches of scaly skin, or the more remarkable trait of a mesmerizing voice. These traits will dilute with each successive generation that such "changeling" children have offspring with regular humans. However, any person who has merrow ancestry can be granted a magical "merrow cap" and take on a merrow form.

Once such a person does so, magic will transform them -- their true body will be the merrow form, and the human body simply a construct for walking about on dry land. Even if one's merrow cap is destroyed, they will be locked into the current form they inhabit, and must weave a new magical cap in order to shape-shift once more.

[getting to know you]

BASICS
Full Name: Heather Ann Harne
Nickname: "Red", which she hates; "Hetty" by her grandparents
Age: 27
Birthday: July 15 (Cancer)
Location: Roane County, Tennessee
Relationship Status: currently single

PHYSICAL
Language/Dialect: English, Appalachian dialect
Height: 6 feet even
Weight: 180 pounds
Hair Color: red
Eye Color: black
Skintone: naturally fair, but tanned by outdoor work
Physical Build: broad-shouldered and noticeably muscular

RELATIONSHIPS
Heather is her mother's eldest child. Heather's mother and father divorced when she was two years old, and she has no memory of her father ever being around. (She has half-siblings from her father that she has never met.)

Heather's mother Rosemarie Harne depended on her parents to help her care for young Heather. Heather was very close to her Nana Day and her Papaw Mike while growing up -- Nana Day in particular hates to come down the mountain for anything, but both of them taught her how to live in the Appalachian Mountains where they made their home.

Rosemarie has since remarried. Heather gets along well with her stepfather (Steven) and his two children -- her older stepbrother Russell and younger stepsister Gemma.

Heather was the only red-haired person in her class, and quickly earned the nickname "Red", which she hates. Her lack of a father until she was twelve years old was also something that got her teased, though she'd always declare that her Papaw Mike was better than any run of the mill dad anyway.

EDUCATION AND VOCATION
Heather graduated high school and took some correspondence courses to get ahead for college. She has earned a bachelor of engineering degree in pursuit of a career as a civil engineer.

Heather worked part time while attending Vanderbilt University. She has experience in construction as well as working as a lifeguard.

HOBBIES
Heather likes to swim, and has some experience with bow-hunting.

She also sings, but it's for the best if no one hears that... not that she's bad at singing, but her speaking voice can easily persuade people to do as she wants, and the effect is much stronger with her singing voice.

OTHER NOTABLES
Heather did not speak aloud until age five. She was taught American Sign Language to communicate after her baby talk inadvertently mesmerized a babysitter. (Nana Day's older brother -- who has since passed away due to old age -- was born deaf, so Nana Day knows American Sign Language thanks to him, and passed the knowledge on to Heather.)

BACKTAGGING: Yes. If you have doubts, feel free to touch base with a direct message.
THREADHOPPING: Yes.
FOURTHWALLING: Anyone who'd recognize a changeling / someone with fae ancestry is welcome to do so
NOT INTERESTED IN: I'm not too interested in playing out smut/NSFW with this muse and would prefer a fade to black

IN CHARACTER

PHYSICAL AFFECTION: Heather is quite extroverted and enjoys both giving and getting physical affection.
PHYSICAL VIOLENCE: She can throw down in a physical fight. She's six feet tall and built like a brick wall, are you sure that you want to fight?
RELATIONSHIPS: Heather is a flirt, but someone pursuing a sincere relationship with her will throw her off.
PSYCHIC & PSIONIC INFORMATION: Heather's voice has a mesmerizing quality that she consciously has to tamp down. This gets stronger if she's singing. It's possible to tell that she's doing it, but hard to resist unless you have psychic defenses or magical abilities of your own.
MAGICAL INFORMATION: the magic of the Finfolk is not accessible by Heather until she is given one of the magical caps. Once this is done, Heather's true body is a 20-foot-long merrow and her human shape merely a construct for interacting with the people on land. Based on the songs they sing, a merrow can summon sea-water to use as defense or attack, compel assistance from others, or heal others.
MEDICAL INFORMATION: When in human form (prior to taking on her fae ancestry, or when in the construct afterward), Heather appears completely human. Doctors can treat her as such when she appears this way. In merrow form, Heather is usually able to heal herself with one of those magical songs.
OFFENSIVE SUBJECTS & TRIGGERS: Heather's father was never in the picture and she doesn't like to talk about him.

AURAL: She has a low, throaty voice with a heavy Appalachian accent. Many times when she speaks, her voice takes on a musical quality that one is drawn to listening to...
OLFACTORY: Heather won't hesitate to get her hands dirty with physical labor and often has a salty, clean sweat smell to her.
DEMEANOUR: Extroverted. High-spirited and friendly. May be quick to anger or quick to judge, but the anger dissipates quickly and she's usually willing to give people another chance.
