Generations back, in a coastal village of what would someday become Northern Ireland, a young man stole the magical cap of a merrow maiden. She became his wife since the theft meant that she was stuck in human form, and bore him two children, but all the while she was weaving herself a new cap so that she could resume her old life. The mysterious disappearance of his wife made the village turn on the man, and his children eventually left for the "New World" in 1757.

These children had few traits that marked them as the son and daughter of a fae creature, but a mesmerizing voice was one of them. The line continued as the family Harne under the son, and as the family Miller under the daughter. With each generation, their vocal powers faded into simple charisma.

Heather Harne is an atavist -- a throwback who has the 'siren voice' much stronger than her mother and grandparents. They think that her father (who is not in the picture) must have magical potential even if he never awakened those powers as a witch.
